Managing severe malnutrition: training course for nurses (2007)

This course was developed by the IMTF and Muhimbili National Hospital, supported by WHO Tanzania, Paediatric Association of Tanzania (PAT) and Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre (TFNC). The course is based on training materials produced by Ann Ashworth, Thandi Puoane, David Sanders and Claire Schofield. It is a 10-hour course designed for nurses and nurse assistants in Tanzania. The course is very interactive and includes group discussions and activities.

Managing severe malnutrition: training course for doctors (2007)

This course was developed by the IMTF, supported by WHO Tanzania, Paediatric Association of Tanzania (PAT) and Tanzania Food and Nutrition Centre (TFNC). The course is based on the ‘WHO Training Course on the Management of Severe Malnutrition’ (2002) and the Tanzanian national guidelines on the management of acute malnutrition. It is a 13- hour course designed for doctors and clinical officers in Tanzania. The course is based around 7 power-point/ OHP presentations and individual and group exercises.

300 page training guide for those running training workshops. Explains how to plan a workshop and contains course materials, handouts and transparencies that participants can use to train their own staff, especially nurses. Available in English from LSHTM, UWC and TALC

Training course on the management of severe malnutrition, by WHO (2002)

7 module training course that includes instructor and participant guides with exercises, photos and video clips, for a 3 day orientation course for instructors and a 6 day training course for senior health workers. Available in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian and Arabic from WHO

Treatment of severely malnourished children, by Schofield, Ashworth and Burgess (2000)

Set of 24 teaching and learning slides for staff in health centres, hospitals and emergency feeding programmes. Available in English from TALC

Nutrition and HIV: A Training Manual for Nurses and Midwives

A Training Manual for Nurses and Midwives designed to provide materials that nursing school instructors can use to teach nursing students the knowledge and skills needed for nutrition care and support of PLHIV has been developed by FANTA-2 with the East, Central and Southern African Health Community (ECSA-HC). While designed to be used for pre-service training, it can also be used or adapted for in-service training. Click this link to access the manual.

The Nutrition Care for People Living with HIV and AIDS: Training Manual for Community and Home-Based Care Providers Facilitators Guide and Participant Handouts developed by FANTA are designed to equip community and home-based care providers with sufficient knowledge and skills to provide nutrition care to PLHIV as part of ongoing services. The materials are designed for training providers who do not have extensive education or technical knowledge.

Nutrition in Emergencies training

UNICEF eLearning Course: Introduction to Nutrition in Emergencies- Basic Concepts

The course is based on key modules of the Harmonized Training Package, Resource Material for Training on Nutrition in Emergencies: The Harmonised Training Package. It is divided into 5 sections, each of which is divided into several lessons and mini-lessons. A lesson takes 40 minutes to complete and a mini-lesson takes 10 to 15 minutes.

There are knowledge based tests to be completed at the end of each module, comprising 15 questions and a pass rate of 80% is required for each test and for the emergency scenario assessment in order for the user to receive a certificate.
