Priority Interventions: HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and care in the health sector

The August 2008 report on priority interventions focused on prevention, treatment and care of HIV/AIDS in the health sector.

Among the topics discussed were management of HIV/AIDS related conditions such as malnutrition, pneumonia, diarrhoea, malaria and hepatitis. This report reiterated that Weight loss and malnutrition are common symptoms of HIV in infants, children and adults, and may be due to reduced food intake, impaired absorption, increased food needs due to opportunistic infections, or other causes.

The summary of recommendations for the management of malnutrition in HIV/AIDS is to give specialized therapeutic foods which are required for persons with BMI<16 and for infants and children with moderate or severe malnutrition.
