New UNAIDS policy on HIV, food security and nutrition
UNAIDS, in collaboration with the World Food Programme (WFP) and the World Organisation (WHO), has developed a policy brief on HIV, food security and nutrition.
The policy brief provides guidance for governments, civil society and other partners on how to address food and nutrition concerns in the context of HIV.
The policy brief recognises that HIV impairs nutritional status, nutrient intake and absorption, and malnutrition can exacerbate the effects of HIV. Food availability and good nutrition are therefore essential for sustaining people living with HIV
In the light of these facts, governments are recommended to expand nutritional support, including for pregnant and lactating women and children.
