South Africa integrates inpatient and community-based management of malnutrition
Progress is being made in South Africa to expand both inpatient and community-based management of severe acute malnutrition.
The Department of Health and Nutrition plans to integrate facility and community based care in South Africa, with support from the Southern Africa Nutrition Capacity Development Initiative (SANCADI). SANCADI has arranged for Malawi to provide technical support for the Community-based Therapeutic Care (CTC) component, whilst the University of the Western Cape will continue to support the strengthening of the facility-based component.
Plans are also being made by the Department of Health to expand implementation of the WHO guidelines for inpatient management, and associated training, from the current 4 provinces to all 9 provinces of the country.
